This is a ring I made for my brother in law, who wanted a ring with a fish on it. He's a fishing enthusiast and works in a fishing tackle store.
The fish is a fairly accurate representation of a Barramundi, a very large and much sought after fish for both sport and eating quality.
I just googled for barramundi images and then hand drew an outline closely resembling the photo.
I cut the fish out using a jewellers saw and hammered it with a homemade tiny ball pein hammer, to both dish it out to give it some depth and to give it a scale pattern, leaving the head and fins smooth. I drilled a small hole for the eye and using a scriber scored little lines on the fins and tail. I cut out an oval for a background as the band is narrower than the fish and it would be too rough and scratchy with no backing. I heavily hammered the oval to give it a watery pattern.
It kind of looks like a fish on a big platter, but that was not the intention. As usual the fish and the disc, curved to fit the ring, didn't fit very closely together so I used a solder with more gap filling ability, and as usual, it was hard to control how much got on there and so ended up with a bit flowing out on the face of the disc.I don't think it matters, just adds to the watery look. The solder is just the same one plumbers use for copper water pipes.
My only complaint is that there is only one colour of metal which is a bit unusual for me, but I think it turned out pretty good.I hope he likes it also.
